complex media environment As the frenzy around "multi-media" subsides, the true potential of digital technology begins to surface. This so-called "new media" has not brought about a revolution that replaces older media and their practitioners: instead, it has brought together disparate practices into a dialogue. Creative people of dissimilar backgrounds can now work together using digital technology as a conduit. With this vision in mind, the School of Creative Media (SCM) was founded in City University of Hong Kong to conduct research and education based on cross-disciplinary collaboration. Complex Media Environment was conceived to exemplify this vision to the public and SCM students. The initial goal of this design project was to create a series of experiential vehicles to showcase SCM's diversity and synergy. In providing a solution to these needs, we conceived a platform that would facilitate and encourage experimentations in collaboration. In order to deliver a message, we created a medium. ![]() ![]() Complex Media Environment is comprised of channels that are both physical and digital. The two main access points are the school's website and a networked multi-media wall outside the school office. Together they form a system that is capable of displaying work in a variety of media, including works that are print-based, time-based, interactive, as well as physical objects. With all channels working in unison, this platform could deliver an experience that exploits the unique advantage of each medium. This system could accommodate a complex project that embodies the material presence of traditional media as well as the fluid and aggregative qualities of the digital. Graphic designers, sculptors, cinematographers, computer programmers, writers, and individuals with other creative talents and skills, would be able to synthesize using this platform. Its locations at both the Web and the school premises allows it to become closely integrated with the everyday operation of the school, putting the reality of the school on display to the public.
